Looking Back on a Special Week

Autumn LeavesDomestic violence has been the theme for the week and it is appropriate that Friday’s ‘Good Afternoon’ should take time to see how different agencies see it, deal with it and, most importantly, help people suffering under the burden of it.

Then there’s the problem faced by so many people who believe their partners love them, yet accept being bullied by them physically or psychologically. How can they be helped? What are the impacts of domestic violence on children, both in the short and long term?

Domestic violence is no respecter of culture, ethnicity or tradition. However, attitudes towards it vary enormously. This too we can explore together.

And in case you were wondering at the relevance of the photo, I feel that it is a timely reminder of the passing beautiful tints of Autumn — and far more interesting than my mug-shot, for I have a face optimised for radio.

I am joined by guests from Basildon Womens’ Aid and from the Police. It promises to be a fascinating conversation and one that could quite simply make all the difference to someone listening who is suffering from bullying by a partner. If you have a friend you feel could be a victim, please get her (or him) to listen in: it could be a life-saver. Literally.

And just for good measure, I will be joined by a group of students from James Hornsby School who come to Gateway FM as part of a Radio course and who will be talking about things that matter to them. Oh yes! There’s also a job spot giving details of jobs going in the area.

‘Good Afternoon’  is an eclectic mix of local interest, local people and local issues; all bound together by relaxing music. It usually comes from the Gateway FM studio in the heart of the Eastgate Centre (overlooking the Food Court on the first floor) but will come from the studio in the new Basildon Upper Academy next Wednesday when there’s the chance to talk to the Principals of both Academies, get a progress report and discover some of the challenges, problems and pleasant surprises of their first term.

I’m Yvonne Williams and host the show most weekday afternoons. However, my place is taken by the wonderfully talented Alison Haythornthwaite each Thursday.

If you have some thoughts on the Basildon Academies or on domestic violence, please let me know through the ‘comments’ section below.
