Digital Blues Gateway – 2nd June 2010

Join me this Wednesday on Digital Blues Gateway for two hours of great blues & real r’n’b. As it is my birthday on Wednesday, I have decided to have a bit of a birthday party with a show full of tracks/artists that I just love.

As a result the playlist has numbers from Tony Joe White, Big Joe Louis & his Blues Kings, Jerimiah Marques & the Blue Aces, Gary Moore, the Snowy White Blues Project, Connie Lush & Blues Shouter, Bad Influence, JJ Cale & Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, Snooks Eaglin, Little Toby Walker, the Roach Twins Band, Sonny Landreth, the Customtones, Southside Denny Snyder, Mark Riley, Denise Brown, Paul Williams & Friends, Storm Warning & Moon Dogs.

In the gig guide there are tracks from Dani Wilde, Will ‘Harmonica’ Wilde and Clive Mulcahy. I doubt that you will find that sort of selection anywhere else so please do join me for what promises to be an extra special show.

DIGITAL BLUES GATEWAY – BRITISH BLUES AWARDS

Digital Blues Gateway is one of six specialist blues radio shows that has been selected by the British Blues Awards to reveal, exclusively, the nominees in the inaugural British Blues Awards ahead of the official announcement on 1st June 2010. On Digital Blues Gateway on 26th May 2010, we will be announcing the nominees in the female vocalist and harmonica player categories and playing tracks from some of the runners & riders.

Digital Blues Gateway is pleased and honoured to be afforded this opportunity and thanks the British Blues Awards.

Digital Blues Gateway – 5th May 2010

On this week’s Digital Blues Gateway radio show on Gateway FM I look forward to the Blues Music Awards in Memphis which take place tomorrow, Thursday 6th May, and play tracks from some of the nominees such as Duke Robillard, Nick Moss & the Flip Tops, The Mannish Boys, Greg Nagy, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, Janiva Magness, Sean Costello, Mike Zito and Fiona Boyes.

There is also another track from the Nottingham Blues Society’s CD featuring the Son Henry Band whilst in the gig guide there are tracks from the Groove Doctors and the Jamie Williams Band.

And I have tracks from new releases from Steve Arvey and Big Jim Adam and John Stilwagen. In a special feature, I mark what would have been Robert Johnson’s birthday on the 8th with two tracks from the man himself and cuts from Robert Palmer & Eric Clapton. Finally, there are tracks from Reba Russell, Billy Lavender and Steve Hooker.

This week on Digital Blues Gateway, there are tracks from new & recent releases from the Kirk Fletcher, Janiva Magness, Missy Anderson, Nick Moss, David Rotundo, Moreland & Arbuckle, Jimmy Thackerey & the Drivers, Sugar Blue and from the Nottingham Blues Society’s just released compilation CD there is a wonderful track from Big Mamma’s Door.

We also have tracks from Luther Allison, the Michael Hills Blues Mob, Andrew Black, and from Southside Denny Snyder’s Lys Award winning CD.

In the gig guide there is news of some great local gigs over the next 7 days as well as tracks from the Jives & the Bare Bones Boogie Band

Finally there is a quintet of John Lee Hooker tracks featuring the man himself and with Bonnie Raitt plus covers from Gary Brooker & Andy Fairweather Low, Jerimiah Marques & the Blue Aces and Tony ‘T.S.’ McPhee with the late Dick Heckstall-Smith.

DIGITAL BLUES GATEWAY – AN EARLIER START TIME

From this week, Digital Blues Gateway is longer! Yes, from Wednesday 10th March, each week’s show will be two hours long so loads more great blues & real r’n’b. The show also starts an hour earlier at 20.00 GMT and runs through until 22.00 GMT.

This week’s show is dedicated to the memory of Essex broadcasting legend, Dennis Rookard who died last week and features two tracks from Joe Bonamassa’s eagerly awaited superb new CD, ‘Black Rock’, as well as tracks from new or recent releases from Dale Storr, Sam Payne, the Michael Louis Band and Tommy Castro. We have the world exclusive first airplay of the as yet unreleased single from Depot, featuring Matt Walklate on harmonica.  

We have wonderful tracks from Hair of the Dog, the Customtones, Janiva Magness, the Hamilton Loomis Band, Sonny Terry with Johnny Winter & Willie Dixon, Troyce Key & JJ Malone, RJ Mischo, Little Axe, the Incredible Blues Puppies, Dino Coccia and Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra featuring the great voice of Sam Brown.

In the gig guide we feature the Bare Bones Boogie Band, Andrew Black from Atlanta whose UK tour starts this week, the Electric Experience, the magnificent Kyla Brox and Dr Feelgood.

Digital Blues Gateway 10th February 2010

This week’s playlist was one which I particularly enjoyed putting together. We opened up with four crackers from Ruf Records’ wonderful stable of international female artists.

From Finland there was Erja Lyytinen, from the UK, Blues Award nominee, Joanne Shaw Taylor plus two brand new CDs from Austrian, Meena and the first Ruf Records CD from the superb Canadian Shakura S’Aida. And that was just the first bit!!!

In the gig guide we had tracks from the Paul Cox Band, The SPIKEdrivers and the Nightflies all of whom were playing locally over the next 7 days then there was a lovely instrumental track from France’s Awek. The final segment featured three more ladies with a superb track from the debut CD from Cath Butler’s Joynt Venture who hail from Queensland, Australia, a track from the late Koko Taylor’s 2007 CD, ‘Old School’, one of Blues Revue’s 25 defining CDs of the last decade and we finished with another Australian artist, Anni Piper. Phew!

More variety than Heinz!!!

Digital Blues Gateway 30th December 2009 – Looking Back Part 1

For the last show of 2009 and of the first decade of the 21st century, I looked back at some of the Essex bands and artists who have entertained us over the last ten years. Featured were the Nightflies, Hair of the Dog, AM5, Roy Mette, Bad Town Blues, the Swamp Cats, the Rockin’ Armadillos, nublues, the Zoltans, the Motel Kings, the Cadillac Kings, and the Heaters.

Digital Blues Gateway 23rd December 2009 – It’s Christmas!!

Christmas comes but once a year so I grabbed the opportunity on the last Digital Blues Gateway of the Christmas RSL to play an hour of Yuletide Blues. I featured tracks from Marcia Ball, Michelle ‘Evil Gal’ Willson, the late Koko Taylor, Shemekia Copeland, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Dave Hole, Carey Bell, the Hitman Blues Band, Lowell Fulson, BB King & John Popper and CJ Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band as well as a great new track from Mark Kerr & Roxy Perry which is not on public release.
