I managed to squeeze in a couple of days in Southport and the Lake District last week, but nice as the trip was, the trouble is coming back – you’ve got all the stuff to do that didn’t get done while you were away, plus there’s the usual business to attend to on top ! It’s Show 9 of the re-launched “Old Gits Soul Show” series and although there’s plenty of summer left (I hope!) I thought it was a good time to have a little change and introduce a new featured track where the “Reggae Got Soul” used to be.

Though the colour of someone’s skin is pretty irrelevant to how good the music they make is, I think it’s fair to say that it is generally accepted that the best soul music over the last 50 years has been made by black folks, so I thought I’d throw in a curve ball each week over the next month or two and play a tune that falls under the category known commonly as “Blue Eyed Soul”. The group I will be playing this week are the first ones I thought of when thinking of ideas for this new feature and made some brilliant tunes across the 70s & 80s – you can hear them along with Central Line, Donald Byrd & The O’Jays and plenty more from 7pm this coming Monday !

I really look forward to coming in to  Basildon each week to do the show. Not just to share some of my cherished soulful tunes form the 70s & 80s with the like minded folk of the area, but also to sample the delights of Eastgate beforehand ! Now I can get a few bits & bobs for the bathroom, some stickers for Nathan’s football album, my mum’s weekly mags and grab a bite to eat – plus anything else I might need in the  Asda which is about twice the size of my local one (and I spend a LOT of time in there…)  Not to mention the bargains to be had in the various “pound” /”99p” shops where I have had countless ideas for small prizes for my quiz nights and the fact that wherever I go before the show starts I usually bump into someone I know from round and about – hey, I’ve nearly got a social life again!!

All of this, of course, is totally irrelevant to “The Old Gits Soul Show” except that by the time I sit down in the studio I am usually in a very good mood and hopefully is reflected in my choice of tracks which this week includes gems from Lou Rawls, Teena Marie, George Duke & Chic and the last slice of “Reggae Got Soul” before I change the “half-time feature” next time out.  Enjoy !

I am not really a sun-loving sort of person to be honest,even though a lot of the soul, disco & jazz-funk I play on the show somehow seems to sound at its best in the summer time. So it is not often that I am seen out in public in shorts, preferring the comfort of a full length pair of jeans as opposed to something that will offer easy access to my shins and ankles to all manner of midges and other assorted insect life forms around Basildon.
