The N Team managed to squeeze in three days on the English Riviera last week before Little N returns to school on Thursday and many urgent jobs got pushed to one side to make way for what amounts to our Summer Holiday 2010 ! But sorting out a fine selection of songs for this week’s “Old Gits Soul Show” wasn’t one of them and I can promise you a bumper bundle of top tuneage from the 70s & 80s including Stevie Wonder, Sharon Brown, Peabo Bryson & The Mac Band.

What a week I’ve just had ! Since last Monday’s show I’ve done 4 quiz nights with 52 teams taking part made up of 209 people – and now I am all quizzed out !! Neil Gits Busy…

After spending most of this year moaning about a lack of work, and a lack of cash to go with it, suddenly August has gone mental and I hardly know whether I am coming or going. On top of that it is of course school holiday month and with a six year old son in my life…say no more !

So, not for the first time recently, it is nice to get in the studio for an hour, switch off from everything and just enjoy playing a few choice tunes from the 70s & 80s for you (although one is actually from much more recent times than that!) Neil Gits A New Idea

It’s Show 9 of the re-launched “Old Gits Soul Show” series and although there’s plenty of summer left (I hope!) I thought it was a good time to have a little change and introduce a new featured track where the “Reggae Got Soul” used to be.

Though the colour of someone’s skin is pretty irrelevant to how good the music they make is, I think it’s fair to say that it is generally accepted that the best soul music over the last 50 years has been made by black folks, so I thought I’d throw in a curve ball each week over the next month or two and play a tune that falls under the category known commonly as “Blue Eyed Soul”. The group I will be playing this week are the first ones I thought of when thinking of ideas for this new feature and made some brilliant tunes across the 70s & 80s – you can hear them along with Central Line, Donald Byrd & The O’Jays and plenty more from 7pm this coming Monday !

Neil Gits His Shopping Done !

I really look forward to coming in to Basildon each week to do the show. Not just to share some of my cherished soulful tunes form the 70s & 80s with the like minded folk of the area, but also to sample the delights of Eastgate beforehand ! Now I can get a few bits & bobs for the bathroom, some stickers for Nathan’s football album, my mum’s weekly mags and grab a bite to eat – plus anything else I might need in the Asda which is about twice the size of my local one (and I spend a LOT of time in there…) Not to mention the bargains to be had in the various “pound” /”99p” shops where I have had countless ideas for small prizes for my quiz nights and the fact that wherever I go before the show starts I usually bump into someone I know from round and about – hey, I’ve nearly got a social life again!!

All of this, of course, is totally irrelevant to “The Old Gits Soul Show” except that by the time I sit down in the studio I am usually in a very good mood and hopefully is reflected in my choice of tracks which this week includes gems from Lou Rawls, Teena Marie, George Duke & Chic and the last slice of “Reggae Got Soul” before I change the “half-time feature” next time out. Neil Gits His Legs Out !

I am not really a sun-loving sort of person to be honest,even though a lot of the soul, disco & jazz-funk I play on the show somehow seems to sound at its best in the summer time. So it is not often that I am seen out in public in shorts, preferring the comfort of a full length pair of jeans as opposed to something that will offer easy access to my shins and ankles to all manner of midges and other assorted insect life forms around Basildon.

Neil Gits Up A Sweat !

The only “cool” thing about my show at the moment is the music ! Not every day recently may have been perfect sunbathing weather, but I can assure you it is always HOT in the studio and reminds me of my very early days as a mere youngster, dabbling in radio for the first time, often under far less than ideal conditions, putting up with all sorts of handicaps, just for the love of the tunes. I think a few people reading this will know where I am coming from …
