Saturday, December 26th, 2009

December always goes by so quickly with all the extra stuff you have to do at this time of year and hours feeling like minutes and once again my latest series of four “Old Gits Soul Shows” went by in a flash !

It was nice to get some lovely feedback from both old friends and total strangers living or previously resident in the Basildon/East Thurrock areas, so I know the tunes I dug out were appreciated and I know I said this after the July shows, but I really must try and put some more together for the internet service before long – watch this space !!

Anyway, just for completists who may have been wondering all over Xmas what the seventh track I played in hour two was or who sang the third song on show two, here is the fourth playlist:

Whatcha See Is Whatcha Git !

That’s the title (almost!) of perhaps the best known song by The Dramatics and though it wasn’t on my latest “Old Gits Soul Show”, their former member LJ Reynolds was and it was he who was the answer to my latest Monday evening quiz question.

If you didn’t tune in, you missed a pretty damn fine impressionof Churchill The Dog (“oh yes!”) and me explaining why I suddenly felt the compulsion to “let one rip” after a brief appearance in the studio by a fellow presenter…

Luckily the music was spot on, so if you promise to listen to the last show in the series this Monday, I’ll try and keep the standard high and get some decent sleep the night before so I don’t talk a load of rambling gibberish…

So here is the latest rather impressive playlist for you to savour:

Jacksons  -  Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)

Linda Clifford  -  Runaway Love

Geraldine Hunt  – Can’t Fake The Feeling

Evelyn King  -   Back To Love

“Music For Young Soul Rebels”…

C & C Music Factory  -  Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me

Stephanie Mills  -  Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’

“Soul Smoothy” …

Whitney Houston  -  Exhale

Chic  -  Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)

Candi Staton  -  When You Wake Up Tomorrow

Loose Ends  -  Tell Me What You Want

Conway Brothers  -  Turn It Up

Sister Sledge  -  Smile

Brass Consrtuction  -  Movin’ On

Steve Arrington  -   She Meets My Aproval

“Reggae Got Soul”…

Freddie McGregor  -  Just Don’t Wanna Be Lonely

Keni Burke  -  Rising To The Top

“Soul Smoothy” …

Luther Vandross  -  Your Secret Love

LJ Reynolds  -  Key To The World

Shannon  -  Sweet Somebody

Third World  -  Dancing On The Floor (Hooked On Love)

People’s Choice  -  Jam Jam Jam

Montana Sextet   -  Heavy Vibes

The “Old Gits Soul Show” broadcasts every Monday from 7-9pm.

” See You When I Git There! “

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The well-worn cliché about “just like riding a bike” was pretty true on Monday. Although it had been nearly six months since the last “Old Gits Soul Show” back in July, I was straight back in the groove as though I’d just had a week’s holiday. Actually, “riding a bike” might have been a better option when it came to getting to the studio, my car coughing and spluttering all the way down Noak Hill from Billericay after going through one too many huge puddles around Ramsden Heath & Downham earlier in the day, finally stalling for the fourth time when nestled in a car park space at the Eastgate Centre. It seems fine now, but …

Anyway, as for the music, I think I’ve set the bar pretty high for the next three weeks, with a good mix of famous names and forgotten favourites, with the likes of George Benson, Shalamar and Anita Baker sitting alongside Brandi Wells, Stargard and Mike & Brenda Sutton – some of these tunes you might not have enjoyed on our airwaves since the golden days of Robbie Vincent & Greg Edwards ! Here’s the full tracklisting for the first show:

Barry White  -  You See The Trouble With Me

Luther Vandross  -  I Wanted Your Love

Jones Girls  -  You Can’t Have My Love

Eugene Wilde  -  Personality

Music For “Young Soul Rebels” :

Faith Evans  -  Love Like This

George Benson  -  Inside Love

“Soul Smoothy” :

Whitney Houston  -  I Believe In You & Me

Atlantic Starr  -  Touch A Four Leaf Clover

Shalamar  -  Make That Move

Brandi Wells  -  Watch Out

Funk Deluxe  -  Tender Lovin’

Raydio  –  Is This A Love Thing

Dexter Wansel  -  Life On Mars

T Connection  –  Do What You Wanna Do

Mike & Brenda Sutton  -  Don’t Let Go Of Me

“Reggae Got Soul” :

Sugar Minott  -  Good Thing Going

Zapp  -  It Doesn’t Really Matter

Shakatak  -  Streetwalking

“Soul Smoothy” :

Anita Baker  -  Body & Soul

Isaac Hayes  -  Theme From Shaft

Stargard  -  Wear It Out

Odyssey  -  Follow Me (Play Follow The Leader)

Hot Streak  -  Body Work

“Old Gits Soul Quiz”

The answer this week was Shakatak  -  Jackie Rawe sand vocals for them in the early 80s and you heard her on “Streetwalking”. I’ll post next week’s question here later along with some of the artists I’ll be playing on the second show – once I’ve phoned the garage for some advice !

The “Old Gits Soul Show” broadcasts every Monday from 7-9pm.

Git Down On It

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

God, I am feeling funky today ! Not long to go now till 7pm on Monday evening and the first show of Series 6 (yes, SIX already!) – I have got so many great tracks that I want to share with the good people of Basildon and East Thurrock, that I have had to refine my plans for the programme slightly.

I have decided to “rest” the “House Full Of Soul” feature for now and trim back the number of 90’s & 00’s tunes a little, so we can really indulge in the classic era of soul, disco & jazz-funk of the late 70’s & early 80’s, with possibly a little more emphasis on the 70’s than in previous shows. Should bring back some smashing memories for the “Soulful Old Gits” living in our area (like me!) …

As ever, there will be a couple of “Soul Smoothies” to savour each hour and though I’ve cut back, there’s still some very tasty music for “Young Soul Rebels” from the last ten or fifteen years to enjoy. The brand new feature is “Reggae Got Soul” – one track selected each week that always went down well with the soul crowd, but with that unmistakable reggae-reggae flavour in the grooves…

With my current reputation as something of a “quiz-king” (see my website for details!) it would seem rude not to have an “Old Gits Soul Quiz” each week and this is the first question:

Some time between 7 & 9pm on Monday, I will be playing a track featuring vocals by Jackie Rawe – which group was she the singer with ?

I very much doubt in the current economic climate I will be able to run to a prize (cop out!!) but do get in touch and let me blow your trumpet for you on air ! To point you in the right direction, the group she was with may or may not be in the list of fabulous artists lined up for the shows below:

George Benson, Shalamar, Whitney Houston, Atlantic Starr, Isaac Hayes, Odyssey, Anita Baker, Rose Royce, Billy Paul, Incognito, Evelyn King, Chic, Teddy Pendergrass, Loose Ends, Candi Staton, Brass Construction, Quincy Jones, Cameo, Stephanie Mills, Heatwave, Barry White, Sister Sledge, Gladys Knight, Gap Band & …guess who ? Luther Vandross !!!

Make sure you tune in Monday Evenings 7-9pm online here or on 87.7FM in Basildon, East Thurrock and surrounding areas.

Speak soon !
