Gateway AGM announcement

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Public notice:- advertisement.

Gateway Community Media CIC, better known by its trading name of Gateway FM, is holding its Annual General Meeting in the Dining Room at Laindon Community Centre on Friday 29th January at 7.00pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

Although the formal part of the meeting is for members, you are welcome to sit in and listen. Once the formal meeting is over, you are welcome to come and talk to any of the Directors and to offer your points of view, for the Company’s aim is to deliver a range of services involving local people to meet local needs.

Perhaps it would help give you an idea of what the station does when you realise that not only has it broadcast on FM as frequently as the law permits, but has also applied for a full 5 year licence to broadcast round the clock.

It also broadcasts over the internet. However, community radio involves far more than broadcasting. Gateway FM continues to provide training courses throughout the year. Some of the courses fit within Key Stage curricular plans; some offer nationally accredited qualifications in subjects such as Radio Presentation, Radio Journalism and Sports Reporting.

The station regularly hosts young people on work placement and provides a range of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages. It offers support to a range of community and charitable organisations and events: the Gateway FM gazebo and roadshow team being a familiar sight around the area, providing music, PA, entertainment and event hosting resources.

We live in a fascinating part of the country: it makes sense for our local radio to reflect that fascination — the history of the area, its customs and dialects, its people and their origins, the different cultural traditions to be found, our local wildlife and our future hopes and plans.

It can look at political issues and how they impact upon us. It can look at our health and healthcare provison; at law and order, local policing and emergency provision. It can help reach both old and young, aims to be accessible when you are at home or on the move, with up to date and useful information about the local things that are relevant to you.  Accordongly , it seeks listener involvement, for we can all help each other if we network effectively and let the station know of local incidents, traffic or travel trouble spots.

Gateway FM has been active in seeking out and promoting talented local people, for it is an ideal showcase. So if you are an instrumentalist, a singer or member of a choir, band or orchestra: the AGM provides a quick way to make contact.

If you are a lover of poetry, involved in drama, a writer, a comedian or an enthusiast for a particular musical genre (e.g. classical, folk, country, blues, rock, jazz, reggae, swing, Celtic) then your enthusiasm may be just the quality needed for you to become a great presenter of the art form, performance or music you love. Once again, the AGM provides a good point of contact.

Of course, our community is made up of many different people from different backgrounds. In order to better reflect and represent that diversity, Gateway FM has already featured regular Russian, African and Polish programmes in which the presenters, speaking mainly in English but also in their mother tongues, introduce music from the lands of their birth and also talk of the differences they have observed in terms of diet, ideas, homelife, customs and culture.

The station is seeking many more people from different traditions, from different  parts of the world who would like to train to present programmes that will introduce unfamiliar music and fresh perspectives to the wider community of listeners. After all, the more we understand each other , the more we recognise how much we have in common: appreciating differences rather than fearing them.

Interested? Then do come along to the meeting and find out more.

Small business network seeks early starters

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Small business people in the Thames Gateway South Essex have a new networking group that will first meet at 7.30 in the morning on Wednesday 20 January at David Lloyd Leisure in Basildon Festival Leisure Park.

David Barnes, Chairman of the South Essex Branch of the FSB, says: “Evidence suggests that effective networking can bring big benefits for businesses enabling them to make other firms aware of the services they offer and also to access new suppliers.

“The launch of this new Basildon Networking Group at David Lloyd Leisure is one which we welcome and which we hope will get a lot of support from businesses in Basildon, Billericay and Wickford.

“The group is being supported by David Lloyd Leisure Limited which means that there is no charge for businesses wishing to attend, making it an even better deal for business owners who come to the meetings.

“Essex FSB’s Keep Trade Local campaign encourages businesses to work together for mutual benefit and this networking group helps promote that objective.”

“The format is informal to encourage people to promote their businesses, share useful tips, ideas and web sites over a coffee where business contacts can be made between people who want to work together for mutual benefit.”

Angela Smith expresses her firm support for the PM

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Yesterday’s apparent attempt (by Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt) to undermine Gordon Brown’s authority has been dismissed by the Prime Minister as a “storm in a teacup”.

Although Foreign Secretary David Miliband had initially seemed somewhat lukewarm in his leader’s support yesterday, he clarified his reaction  today  with unequivocal backing for the Prime Minister declaring “we are all determined to win the election under Gordon’s leadership”.

The Rt.  Hon. Angela Smith, MP for Basildon and East Thurrock has been typically forthright about her priorities and continuing support for Mr Brown. She tells Gateway FM:  ”The vast majority of Labour MPs are concerned with ensuring we put the right economic measures in place to continue to steer us out of the recession.

“Gordon Brown has shown his commitment to intervening in the economy, as he did to support the banks and protect people’s savings and mortgages, and I support his continued leadership of my party and the country.”

Where’s the terrible Basildon Hospital then? Surely not in Essex

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

New information from the health data company, Dr Foster states that: “the Trust has now achieved 6 months ‘within expected’ HSMR performance – the latest upload with September discharges went live last night, and this is very encouraging.”

Alan Whittle, the Trust’s Chief Executive said: “This is good news as it shows a sustained improvement for the first 6 months of the 09/10 year.  The figure that was announced last week was for 08/09.   This demonstrates that we have been tackling the issues and are making progress.  We also have an effective programme in place to make further improvements.

“We have been very careful to scrutinise the quality of care for our patients, while also trying to ensure that the data being provided to Dr Foster is as accurate as it can be.  In the last year or so, we have opened a dedicated cancer ward, a short-stay ward, introduced 24/7 thrombolysis for stroke and have more senior doctors on duty during the evenings and weekends to provide more expert assessment more quickly.  Speedier diagnosis is a critical factor in patient safety.  It means a patient gets the right treatment in the right place at the right time.  We have also set up the life-saving emergency primary angioplasty service for heart attack patients from across Essex.”

The Trust has been working with Dr Foster for the last 18 months.  Prior to buying the Dr Foster system last year, it used a different healthcare benchmarking company, which set it at 107 for the year 2007/08 and on a downward trend.

The main difference between the two systems is that Dr Foster relies on the initial diagnosis to make its calculations, whereas the CHKS system adjusts the risk according to other conditions or problems recorded later in a patient’s admission.  Of course, this means that for Dr Foster to present an accurate picture, it is important that the initial diagnosis on admission takes full account of the patient’s overall health.

Quite simply, if two people are admitted, each with a sprained ankle, it is important to know other risk factors that could affect outcomes. One could be a fit young footballer whose sprain resulted from an awkward tackle during a match. The other could be a 92 year old with diabetes, high blood pressure, anaemia and pneumonia. If sprains only were recorded at admission, no allowance would be made for the different risks using Dr Foster methods.

However the Trust has introduced new ways of working to improve the accuracy of Dr Foster calculations as well as improve quality and speed of diagnosis, resulting in better patient care and experience.

The Dr Foster organisation has confirmed its commitment to “helping as much as we can in terms of the data/monitoring side of the work that is needed in order for the Trust to meet its objectives”.

It is worth noting that the Trust moved to the Dr Foster system as it had become the nationally recognised system quoted on the NHS Choices website.  The function of the system is to indicate to hospitals when the risk of mortality for a particular diagnosis appears to be higher that the national average in order to trigger a review of care in this area.  The Dr Foster HSMR is a calculation of risk, not a count of the number of patients who died.

Basildon University Hospital, for the last 18 months, has had a process in place where every death, unexpected or otherwise, is peer-reviewed by a consultant not connected with the patient’s care, in order to ensure that the correct treatment and procedures have been followed.   In addition, the Trust has used expert independent clinical advice and nothing has pointed to a fundamental problem with clinical care.

MP Backs Action Against Violence Towards Women and Girls

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
angela mpAngela Smith, MP for Basildon and East Thurrock, is backing an ambitious new strategy to combat violence specifically directed against women and girls.

From 2011, preventing violence in relationships will be included in personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education, so attitudes that condone and perpetuate violence against women are addressed before they become entrenched in young people.

An awareness-raising publicity campaign to change behaviour will start in the New Year with a high profile drive to tackle violence in teenagers’ relationships.

Angela, a Patron of Basildon Women’s Aid,  said, “Violence against women and girls ruins lives, breaks up families and has a lasting impact across the generations.”

The strategy sets out a range of actions for the police, local authorities, the NHS and government departments across three key areas:

Prevention
A national long-term communications strategy designed to challenge attitudes and raise awareness of existing support services which support women and children affected by violence. An awareness campaign involving the NSPCC, targeting violence within teenagers’ relationships. Increased investment in Family Intervention Projects, leading to an increase in the number of families supported from 2,700 to 10,000 families per year by 2010/11 and establishing a dedicated stalking/harassment helpline

Provision
£13m of Government funding next year, including more money for sexual assault referral centres, local rape crisis services, Independent Domestic and Sexual Violence advisors and support for trafficked women; new guidance for PCTs and local government on how best to commission services for victims of violence.
Protection
introduce new ‘Go’ orders giving police and courts the power to exclude perpetrators from victims’ homes for up to 28 days to give victims a breathing space to apply for longer term protection.
